95000 students got Free Admission in Assam

Around 95000 students got Free Admission in Assam for poor students from underprivileged sections have been offered free admission from Class 11 to post-graduation in colleges and universities in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.

Under the ‘Pragnya Bharati Scheme’, Sarma distributed Rs 68.44 crore among 349 colleges and universities to provide free admission in higher secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate courses in arts, science, and commerce streams.

He informed that in the first phase of the academic year 2024-25, 94,838 students from poor and middle class families of 349 colleges and universities have benefited and Rs 68.44 crore has been distributed.

Sarma informed that the first phase of admission fee was paid on Wednesday, while the next payments will be made in the coming months after document verification.

Assam Higher Education Spot Admissions

“The next round of spot admissions and fee waiver for third and fifth semesters for CUET and non-CUET candidates will be distributed in September,” he said. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu had said last week that earlier, students with annual parental income up to Rs 2 lakh were eligible for free admission but from this year, the limit has been raised to Rs 4 lakh.

Pegu said colleges now allow ration cards as proof of family income instead of income certificates. Since the introduction of the scheme, a total of 22,30,257 students have been benefited by paying a total of Rs 826.36 crore till the last academic year, officials said.
